How to care for your dentures
Taking good care of your dentures not only keeps them in proper shape, but keeps your mouth in good shape as well. Here are some some simple, yet effective tips for cleaning, handling, and storing your dentures to maintain good oral hygiene.
Clean your dentures daily
Make it a point to brush your dentures every day with a toothbrush. Ensure that the toothbrush has soft bristles to avoid damaging the dentures. Brush the dentures the same way you would brush your teeth. Food particles and plague should be removed through proper brushing of dentures. Brushing also prevents permanent stains from forming on the dentures. Gently brush the surfaces of the dentures and do not damage the plastic attachments. Also, make it a point to rinse your dentures after every meal.
Only mild soap or mild dishwashing liquid should be used for cleaning the dentures. Never use household cleansers and toothpastes, as they may not be gentle on the dentures. Even though you may want to whiten your dentures, never use bleach as this may whiten the pink portion of the dentures too.
If you have ultrasonic cleaners, you can use them to care for your dentures. You can get these cleaners in the market. They are small, bathtub-like devices that contain a cleaning solution. The dentures should be immersed in the tub and then, the device generates sound waves, which create a wave motion to dislodge the unwanted particles on the dentures. Ultrasonic cleaners cannot replace your daily brushing regime. Dentists recommend the usage of products with the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance, since they have been evaluated for effectiveness as well as safety.
Handle your dentures with care
Dentures are delicate and need careful handling. In fact, they are so fragile that it will shatter into pieces when dropped accidentally. So, when you are handling your dentures, make it a point to hold them with a soft towel. Also, fill the sink with water so that dentures do not break, even when dropped accidentally.
Store your dentures properly, in a denture solution
Dentures will get distorted if emerged in hot water or if they become dry. When you are not wearing your dentures, always keep them in water (not hot water) or in a denture solution recommended by your family dentist. However, if the dentures come with metal attachments, the attachments can get damaged if placed in a soaking solution. So, remove the metal attachments from the dentures before placing them in a soaking solution.
If your dentures don’t fit in your mouth as day goes by, make an appointment with your dentist to get them repaired or replaced. Never attempt to adjust the dentures on your own as improper handling can damage the dentures and the glue in the dentures can harm your skin. Dentures that don’t fit perfectly in your mouth can cause irritation. They can also cause sores in the mouth and gums. If your dentures are broken, cracked or chipped, contact your dentist immediately and get them repaired as soon as possible.
