Sealants for Kids
Dental sealants are like plastic coatings that are applied to the biting or occlusal surfaces of permanent, posterior teeth. These surfaces have many deep fissures and grooves which are difficult to reach and clean and can accumulate food debris, plaque and bacteria and cause tooth decay.
Sealants can be placed on newly erupted permanent molars and premolars, to prevent tooth decay in these teeth at an early age when the child does not take proper care of his/ her teeth.
The procedure is very simple. To begin with, the tooth surface is thoroughly cleaned with a fluoride paste and a rotating brush. The tooth is then washed and dried. An acidic solution is placed on the fissures and grooves of the tooth’s occlusal surface for a few seconds, and then rinsed off. This acid treatment creates minute, microscopic areas and a roughened surface which enables the dental sealant to bond to the tooth. The tooth is thoroughly dried once again and the fluid dental sealant is placed into the acid treated grooves and fissures. It is then hardened or “cured” using a blue LED light. Once the dental sealant hardens, it becomes a tough, hard, varnish coating on the grooved surfaces of the teeth, safely blocking them and preventing accumulation of plaque and bacteria.
Sealants are highly effective in preventing dental decay and can last many years, keeping the teeth safe and bacteria-free.
